Hawkwind Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club

Mission statement:
Hawkwind is a club where like-minded people from all walks of life live out there passion for flying in a relaxed and passionate way. It is one of the oldest clubs in SA, where we appreciate the brotherhood amongst paragliders and hang gliders, and where we embrace and welcome all fliers who want to share our skies with us in the same spirit of friendship, camaraderie and respect for each other and the environment.

Hawkwind members fly sites from the Tsitsikamma to the Karoo, but our main and regular sites are close to Port Elizabeth. These sites include:

A coastal ridge soaring site (also our training site with dreaded dune climbs for new students) that has the distinction of being flyable on a SW when most other sites are blown out.

Lady Slipper
A SW and NE site suitable for beginners and more advanced pilots, and a good site to hone your flying skills. Flying is a mixture of ridge soaring and thermic conditions.

This SW site outside Humansdorp is ideal for the first steps towards cross country flying.

Our newest site is close to Eerste Rivier in the Tsitsikamma, works best on light SW breezes and offers lovely opportunities for more advanced flying.

The above sites are the ones that we fly most frequently. Other more distant sites include Krommedam, Bedford, Hoeksfontein and Graaff Reinet.

We respect the rights, privacy and wishes of landowners, and we endeavour to build and maintain good relationships with them.

Hawkwind is closely associated with Cal Dyker’s Airventures Paragliding School. Club members keenly source new students for the school, while the school acts as a feeder for the club. Existing members accept responsibility for and render assistance to new members in the club, accepting that seniority and experience are not qualifications, but rather responsibilities towards less experienced members. The same relationship is envisaged with Dirkie's Air hang gliding school in the near future.
This unique relationship keeps petty politics and commercialism out of our club.
Cal is also the South Africa agent for Gin Gliders.

Member’s achievements:
Although our club focus on the social aspects of flying, many members perform well when competing. We regularly have podium finishers in national competitions, and Hawkwind is very proud of our own Nevil Hulett, the world record holder for the longest distance flown with a paraglider.
